How does it feel to have a World’s Best whisky?

03.07.24
In 2024, The English Distillery took home the title of World’s Best Single Malt for their exemplary Sherry Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky. The distillery competed against 1000s of entries from all over the world and still managed to impress the World Whiskies Awards judges the most in the Single Malt category.

We spoke to Andrew Nelstrop, managing director of The English Distillery, and discussed what the award meant for both the company’s present and future.

How does it feel to have been awarded the title of World’s Best Single Malt by the World Whiskies Awards 2024?
Fabulous. To enter a competition against 1200 of our peers and be blind tasted against them all - is very daunting. To end up being voted best Single Malt in the World 2024, is a fantastic testament to the distillery team and proves that putting quality and time before all else – really does pay dividends.

English whisky is often dwarfed by its Scottish and Irish competitors, would you say there’s potential for English whisky to match its competitors in the future?
In terms of quality – we as an industry are already there and can match any other nation. It may be a long time before we match them on quantity but that may not be a bad thing. Quality must always come before quantity.

Are there any company developments you’re particularly proud of? Or perhaps ones you’re excited about?
The English Distillery never stops innovating and developing; this year we have seen the restaurant re-open on site which is fantastic and well worth a visit. We are also investing in new maturation warehousing and a super new bottling line.

Would you say winning an award like this is helpful for Whisky brands?
Winning any award gives credibility to the winning product which of course helps with sales and marketing. Awards are particularly useful in this age of marketing by social media, as it is normally a very striking and recognisable piece of artwork that stands out when scrolling through many stories.

Would you have any advice for other whisky brands thinking about entering the World Whiskies Awards?
Awards maybe aren’t for everyone, but I think they do 4 jobs for the entrant: they judge your product against rivals without prejudice; any result is informative for you and your staff (good or bad) and in the event you win an award it is a useful marketing tool and pat on the back for your team.
